Creatively Coloring & installing your tiny century old metal tile roof... rare Salvage Building Ideas.
Yes, Hail hath fallen upon these shingles over a century upon the roof protecting Americans from the storms. Why not another life century atop a Tiny Texas Chapel?
Once upon a time, more than a century ago, homeowners were putting these very tiles upon the roofs of their homes in San Antonio or other parts of Texas. The storms would throw winds and heavy hail against it and dent it with the forces of hammers yet it withstood the test of time but typically, the valley did not get cleaned out from the leaves and clutter that caused them to rust. Eventually, the roofing repair guys are called to fix the leaks and more profitably but unnecessarily, decide to update the field, the large open spans are not in the gutters where the gables meet and there are no leaks. Somehow, rather than reusing the old, they convince the owner they needed an all-new roof when in truth, just new valleys could have done fine. Indeed, with a good bit of work but still, this 00 gauge galvanized tin was not nearly fully used up or aged. So we shall use it for a tiny house for a half a century more or until the roof may leak through the self sealing underlayment guaranteed for 30 years.
No steel mills cranked up their furnace to make a single tile this time, nor did the mills crank up the presses to create tiles out of sheet steel sent on to be your roof one day. Indeed no child pulled coal again as they did when this was made, for in 1800 child labor was abundant, nearly free. So why waste all the metal and the history it holds? Why not spruce it up a bit and let its life go on? Indeed you see that the energy you save and the story that it tells will make this chapel full of life created from the past. The mixture of the patterns is supposed to represent the clouds, rain pouring down upon the houses, and buildings not yet painted on. Raindrops of colors splattered about will represent Spring Rains on one side of the house and the other perhaps stormy sky, the darker side of life, a Chapel for the Swines who spent a time as human friends, indeed a place for memories when cherished lives will end.
Stagger the rows so that you have a half tile to start, cut and it is ready, the the vice clamps to straighten the sides and bottoms, flatten old nail holes.
The objective with the vice clamps is to get the bulk of the bends out, each slides into the next, then is nailed to hold it down, nailed atop and covered by the next so no nail holes show. Just in case, the underlayment seals all the staples as they go through to the wood so that even if the metal leaks it can not reach the wood but will pour off to the ground and do no damage to the home for 50 years or so.
They can paint them and straighten them while waiting for old cold weather like we have had down here and may still have again this winter that is bold. Imagine worse winters for they come, this I do know, truly one that comes next year, so know that if in a tiny house is shows that its easy to stay warmest for the cheapest when it’s cold. If you insulated this one you could live in it through snow and put it on the trailer when it came the time to go.
Bend the corners so that no one cuts their head when walking by, and it strengthens it for all the hits that could make somebody cry. Missing this opportunity to learn, to create, do it right… will you miss your opportunity that is slipping out of sight? Soon this offer will run out, not sure if we offer more, though try, I don’t know of anyone else that is offering the chance but I, and know it won’t be long before I stop, then do not cry. YOU have a chance to get the parts, to learn how to create like these kids with no experience, they are doing it to their delight, and most could do it to if they just say so on this night, awaken in the morning and take action that is right to manifest your dreams this year, not just watch and wish you might.
